Ajax is renowned for its Totaalvoetbal (Total Football) philosophy which was implemented in the 1960s by Rinus Michels. This style of play is built on fluidity; the players know where to be at all times, filling the spaces vacated by teammates and splintering the opposition with surgical precision. Under the leadership of Michels and Johan Cruyff, Ajax went through a golden era in the 1960s and 1970s, winning seven Eredivisie titles, four domestic cups, and three European championships.
